Outreach, mentoring and inclusion
Building pathways into graduate school
Prof. Mendoza-Cortés served on the American Physical Society's Committee on Minorities (2019 annual report). During his term the APS Bridge Program became part of the Inclusive Graduate Education Network, a partnership of about 30 societies, companies and national laboratories supported by NSF. The program has helped enroll hundreds of Black, Latinx and Indigenous students in Ph.D. programs.
Mentoring students from groups underrepresented in STEM
Most of the more than 30 trainees hosted by the lab come from groups underrepresented in STEM; several undergraduates published papers, including first-author articles, and went on to graduate school or industry. The group hosts students from national programs such as NSF REU sites, AFRL-DREAM, PAREDS, SROP and TEAM-UP TURF.
Science for the public in English and Spanish
Science-news groups on social media with tens of thousands of members (chemistry, mathematics, physics and the international olympiads), a bilingual science-news blog (see the archive), certified Wikipedia editing for science and engineering articles, and public lectures such as the inaugural RAZOR lecture at the Challenger Learning Center.
Teachers and K–12 students
Hosted middle-school teachers through the Research Experiences for Teachers program at the National MagLab, gave talks at NASA Challenger museums and STEM events (hackathons, Learn to Code, STEM Day, City Science Festival), and spoke to thousands of Latino students at the Adelante Young Men conference.
Recruiting future engineers at MSU
Presentations at Engineering Preview Day for high-school students, and an interactive activity for Admitted Students Day that lets visitors build any material or molecule on the spot, much as in a video game.
