Frederick L. Johns

Frederick Lebrecht Johns (BS Chem Egr ‘52) of Clearwater, Fla., died peacefully surrounded by his family on May 31, 2015, after a brave fight against heart disease. He was 86.

He was born Dec. 14, 1928, in Palmyra, N.Y. He graduated from Palmyra Classical School in 1947.

He attended Michigan State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering in 1952.

He married his high school sweetheart Rena Shogren in June of 1952.

After moving to Niagara Falls, N.Y., he began working for Dupont Chemical Corp. as a chemical engineer and was later employed as a chemical sales representative in Delaware, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, and Michigan before retiring at age 55 and moving to Clearwater, Fla.

He was an accomplished outdoorsman and sailor, and in his later years he enjoyed traveling internationally and exploring new places with his wife.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rena; his brother Richard Johns of Bellefontaine, Ohio; his children David Johns of Traverse City, Mich., William Johns of Miami, Fla., Karen (Johns) Brandon of Lexington, Mich., numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
