Diamond polishing begins by gluing a diamond onto the bottom of an asembly arm which then is held against a high speed, rotating cast iron wheel, which is coated with diamond powder. The diamond is held against the wheel and the diamond starts polishing.
While the diamond is polishing it emits a "noise." These "noises" are actually frequencies which vary depending on the blance of the arm and wheel as well as the surface and shape of the diamond.
Currently, other than listening with your own ear, the diamond polishing labhas no way of indicating how smoothly the polishing is going. Our goal is to create a device that will send real-time data to the operator so they can monitor the current polishing diamond as well as give data to the operator in order to facilitate future experiments.
