About

Tirgariseraji holds a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics-Agricultural Policy and Development. His research interests include bioeconomic modeling, resilience, sustainable food systems, and dietary transitions and preferences.

During his doctoral studies, Tirgariseraji completed research sabbaticals at the Center for Development Research (ZEF), University of Bonn, Germany, and the Norwegian Institute of Bioeconomy Research (NIBIO), Norway. These experiences helped him further develop his dissertation on less environmentally impactful diets and bioeconomic modeling.

After defending his Ph.D. dissertation in February 2024, Tirgariseraji joined the Department of Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering (BAE) at Michigan State University, USA, as a Research Assistant, under direction of Prof. A.Poyan Nejadhashemi. His current research focuses on two main areas.

First, he conducts research in normative economics, with particular emphasis on: (i) developing a new functional form of the utility function to capture non-monotonic behavior and the trade-offs between economic gains and environmental benefits; and (ii) proposing a new procedure for identifying the economic and non-economic zones of production functions for nitrogen fertilizer by incorporating the dynamic interactions among farm size, nitrogen-intensive production strategies, and nitrogen-saving strategies. Based on these contributions, the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association (AAEA) accepted his proposal for an organized session entitled “Normative Economics in Eco-Environmental Schemes”, where these new theoretical developments will be discussed by leading agricultural economists.

Second, he develops conceptual frameworks for resilience assessment based on the shock-failure-recovery sequence. His work in this area has been published in Agricultural Systems.

Through these contributions to normative economics and resilience conceptualization, Tirgariseraji seeks to advance economic approaches for evaluating solutions that maintain food production within the planet’s “Safe Operating Space”, contributing to the broader scientific paradigm of the “Planetary Boundaries”.
