Teaching Philosophy

The Nicholas Group teaching philosophy is that a teacher must both inspire and instruct. Therefore within each lecture, rigorous, mathematical analysis is accompanied by instructional demos and active learning exercises. Students appreciate this approach, as evidenced by the student-determined course ratings below, the teaching reviews at RateMyProfessor.Com, and Professor Nicholas's receipt of a 2013 Michigan State College of Engineering Withrow Teaching Award.

Courses Taught
MSE 474Ceramic & Refractory Materials
MSE 454 Glass Shop Visit
Pulling a Fiber Optic Glass Fiber
In MSE 474, Dr. Nicholas presents the interplay between the structure, properties and high-temperature processing of traditional and advanced ceramics. A copy of the MSE 474 syllabus is available here.
MSE 855-Advanced Rate Theory and Diffusion
MSE 855 Interdiffusion
Interdiffusion in an A-B Couple
In MSE 855, Dr. Nicholas presents the physical processes, mathematical descriptions, and experimental methods involved in understanding the kinetics of diffusion, electro-migration, chemical reactions, phase transformations, and microstructural evolution. A copy of the MSE 855 syllabus is available here.
