Graduate Student Association Mentor
CHEMS-GSA Logo Dr. Nicholas is the founding and current faculty mentor of the Michigan State University (MSU) Chemical Engineering and Materials Science Graduate Student Association (CHEMS-GSA). Annual Girl Scout STEM Visit Day

In 2013, Prof. Nicholas founded a Michigan State University Girl Scout STEM Demo Day that had faculty and student-run demo stations on Plants that Move, Electricity and Magnetism, Solar Energy, Chloroplast Division, Basic Lung Function, Bacteria, Stream Restoration, Lip Gloss Manufacture, Smashing Nucleii, Face Recognition, High Speed Photography, Computer Puzzles, Scanning Electron Microscopy of Everyday Objects, The Hydrologic Cycle, Animal Hospital, Fruit Batteries, and Fuel Cells. After 3 years of successful operation, in 2016 this annual event was handed off to a new MSU Women in Engineering, Recruitment and K-12 Outreach Office, opened to all 4-8th grade girls, and rebranded as an “Introduce a Girl to Engineering” Day that had >500 girls participate, bussed inner city girls to the event, and had average anonymous event ratings of 3.8/4. This event still occurs each February.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Community Organizer

Dr. Nicholas organized a July 2013 Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Promise, Progress, and Priorities workshop aimed at bringing together individuals from academia, industry and government to discuss ways to advance SOFC research and technology. For details see www.sofcwg.org.

In addition to serving on the Electrochemical Society High Temperature Materials Division Executive Committee, Dr. Nicholas is a reviewer for the Journal of Power Sources, the Journal of Materials Science, the Journal of the American Ceramic Society, the Journal of the Electrochemical Society, Electrochemistry Communications, Solid State Ionics, Chemistry of Materials, and many other journals.
