Udell "Del" Blanchard

Udell “Del” Blanchard (BS MECH EGR ’55) of Grandville, Mich., died Oct. 29, 2016, after a long illness. He was 83.

He was born in Jackson, Mich., on June 10, 1933. Early in his childhood the family moved to Grand Rapids, where part of his education was in a one-room schoolhouse in Byron Center. As a student at Byron Center High School, he was active in football and baseball, and served as both class president and student council president.

He continued his education at Grand Rapids Junior College and Michigan State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1955.

After graduation, he enlisted and served in U.S. 3rd Armored Division (Patton's former division) and was stationed in Germany. After an honorable discharge, he began a career at American Seating Company, where he worked as an innovation and design engineer for 39 years until his retirement.

Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Inese, his daughter Michelle Blanchard, grandson Anthony (Ellie) Galas, and numerous cousins.
