Roger C. Haut presented ASME recognition for outstanding achievements in bioengineering 

Roger C. Haut, University Distinguished Professor of mechanical engineering and radiology, was awarded the 2016 H. R. Lissner Medal during the Summer Biomechanics, Bioengineering and Biotransport Conference (SB3C) in National Harbor, Maryland, on July 2. 

The national recognition honors outstanding achievements in the field of bioengineering and is presented by the Bioengineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Roger C. Haut’s daughter, Tammy Haut Donahue, who served as the SB3C program chair, presented him with the Lissner medal. She received an ME degree from MSU and now is an ME professor at Colorado State University.

Haut received a bachelor’s degree (cum laude) in mechanical engineering (1967) and a master’s degree (1968) and PhD (1971) in engineering mechanics from Michigan State University. 

After graduation he started a career in trauma biomechanics at the General Motors Research Laboratories.

He was named the first chairman of the Industrial Liaison Committee for the ASME Bioengineering Division and has served on the Honors and Y.C. Fung Young Investigator Committees. 

In 1986, he moved to MSU in the Department of Biomechanics in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. He founded and is currently the director of the Orthopaedic Biomechanics Laboratories. 

Haut has made it a priority during his academic career to train students in the basic principles of engineering science during their bioengineering research projects. He has mentored more than 80 graduate students in his career.

Roger C. Haut presented an award lecture as part of the ASME celebration for his outstanding achievements in bioengineering.

He has published more than 150 manuscripts in peer-reviewed archival journals, which have been cited more than 5,000 times in the scientific literature. 

H.R. Lissner Medal
The H.R. Lissner Medal recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of bioengineering. Achievements may be from significant research contributions in bioengineering; development of new methods of measuring in bioengineering; design of new equipment and instrumentation in bioengineering; educational impact in the training of bioengineers; or service to the bioengineering community and to the ASME Bioengineering Division. 

The award was established in 1977 as a divisional award and upgraded to a society award in 1987, following a donation from Wayne State University. It is named in honor of Professor H. R. Lissner of Wayne State University for his pioneering work in biomechanics that began in 1939.
