“The Past, Present, and Future of IGBT Device Technology”

The Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) has gone through a 30 year journey of conceptualization, proof of concept, initial commercialization, and wide spread adoption. It is interesting to look at the history of technological innovation of this power switch technology which is widely used in motor drives and other power converters. It is even more interesting to look into the future of this 30 year old technology to see how much further the industry can improve its performance with existing and emerging applications of power electronics.



Z. John Shen received his BS from Tsinghua University, China in 1987, MS and PhD all in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA in 1991 and 1994 respectively. He held various positions including Senior Principal Staff Engineer with Motorola Power Products Division between 1994 and 1999. He was on the faculty of the University of Michigan-Dearborn between 1999 and 2004, and the University of Central Florida between 2004 and 2012. He has joined Illinois Institute of Technology in 2013 as the Grainger Endowed Chair Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He has also served as the chief scientist and a board member of Great Wall Semiconductor between 2002 and 2012, responsible for the company’s technology roadmap in high frequency lateral power MOSFETs. His research interests include power semiconductor devices and ICs, power electronics, automotive electronics, and renewable energy systems. He has authored and co-authored over 150 journal and conference publications and holds 13 issued US patents. He is the recipient of the 2012 IEEE Region 3 Outstanding Engineer Award, the 2003 National Science Foundation CAREER award, and two IEEE Transactions Prize Paper awards in 2003 and 2007 respectively. He is an IEEE Fellow and has served IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) in various capacities including Vice President of Products (2009-2012), Member at Large (2001-2007), Technical Program Chair of ECCE2010. Technical Program Chair of PESC2007, Technical Program Chair of VPPC2005, General Chair of WPET2004, Finance Chair of Energy2030, Chair of Technical Committee on Transportation Power Electronics, and Chair of Technical Committee on Power Semiconductor Devices.
