The mission of the Center for Systems Biology at MSU is to develop novel methods for biomedical investigators to analyze mathematically the multi-source and multi-level data so that they can predict and optimize cellular processes, gain improved understanding of disease processes, and identify targets for new drugs and therapies.

High throughput technologies have revolutionized biomedical research and the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. An important challenge in the development of new drugs and therapies for complex, multi-factorial diseases is obtaining improved and comprehensive representations of disease processes. Physiological processes involve the interplay of genes that may act in concert or opposition to regulate metabolic enzymes and signaling pathways at the cellular and tissue level. A systems biology approach enables one to evaluate information derived from various levels, genetic to metabolic, in ways that reconstruct associations that reveal a biological system's behavior.
