The goal of the SEE Scholars program is to increase retention and persistence to degree completion for academically talented engineering students. The SEE Scholars program is supported through a grant from the Scholarships in STEM (S-STEM) program at the National Science Foundation. SEE scholarships are awarded to engineering students in their second and third years of study at Michigan State University. SEE is integrated with proven academic, professional, and psychologically supportive programs in the College of Engineering to motivate and sustain these academically talented students throughout their undergraduate careers. Two explicit goals for SEE scholars are for them to obtain their first internship or co-operative education opportunity and 100% retention and persistence to graduation. In collaboration with researchers from the College of Education, SEE is examining how being a SEE Scholar affects students’ feelings of belonging, motivation, and persistence to graduation. We anticipate that the data generated will be widely applicable to colleges of engineering seeking approaches to maximize student retention and success.
The SEE Team consists of:
- S. Patrick Walton (PI and Mentor)
- Shanelle Foster (coPI and Mentor)
- Lisa Linnenbrink-Garcia (coPI and Research Lead)
- Mark Urban-Lurain (External Evaluator)
To become a SEE Scholar, applicants must first submit an application for a returning student scholarship from the College of Engineering (application window: February of each year).
