Department of Mechanical Engineering
The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest department in the College of Engineering. It was established in 1885, seven years before the formal establishment of the College. The department currently has a faculty of thirty-four full-time professors, four professors with joint appointments, and one adjunct professor, as well as four academic specialists and seven support staff. We have the largest undergraduate program in the college, with approximately 470 juniors and seniors enrolled. In
the academic year 2001-02 we awarded 176 BSME degrees, 21 MSME degrees, and 7 PhD degrees.

The Undergraduate Course
Our undergraduate program, which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore MD 21202-4012 - telephone (410) 347-7700, has several noteworthy features. The basic curriculum integrates a strong science base with an excellent design core. Our students develop their skills in communication, both written and oral, through an integrated communications program. In addition, our department has a very exciting international program, with options for study around the globe; also, the program brings in a diverse group of foreign students to study with us. Another popular option is cooperative education.

| Introduction to Design Program
The
Design Program has educated more than 1600 students since 1994. In
this time, over 400 senior level capstone projects have been
completed for over 100 small, medium sized, and large manufacturers
in over 30 different industries located in over 50 communities.
Students have collaborated with manufacturers in Indiana, Iowa,
Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, Ontario, Nebraska, North Carolina and Tennessee, as well as
in our home state. Perhaps most inspiringly, our students have
completed a raft of humanitarian projects that are truly
heartwarming. The Design Program was originated more than ten years ago for
enhancing design education, incorporating an end-of-semester
undergraduate design conference, and a program of outreach
scholarship. |
