The Project
Overview:
The design project is to develop a remotely operated intrusion alarm, which will alert the user via email and text message that there has been an intrusion. For this project, the task will be using radar working in stand-alone mode to detect the intrusion; this will then send information about the intruder to the user’s cell phone. This project has been developed in a smaller version by other students, which was previously developed by MIT Lincoln Laboratory as a classroom project. However, this system has many shortcomings such as speed, accuracy and portability. These three parts are key to fulfilling the design requirements.
A major piece of this design is to build a 2.4 GHz radar which would detect an intruder in a given area. The radar will calculate the range and speed of the intruder, which will be sent to the user when an intrusion occurs. For the radar, there will need to be an interface constructed, which could be for a smart phone, laptop, or a normal cell phone. The antenna is the first component for this design, leaving the middle section as a major design component which would eventually pass the data to the laptop for transmission to a cell phone via text message, and sending an email to the user. The best way to incorporate the processing between the antenna and the laptop is using a TI ADC PCM1808 in combination with TI Stellaris LM3S9D92 microcontroller. By using these two components most of the interfacing is already incorporated between the two. After that, we just port all of the information from the Stellaris via ethernet to the PC, and the PC send the message to the user. This design is small, power efficient, and will allow maximum sampling rate in order to obtain real-time data, as well as system portability.
