Laboratory safety

Every new member of our research group and visitors who plan on using equipment in the laboratory must download and read CEE Safety Manual.

Note that our laboratory is biosafety level 2 (BSL-2). Visitors who wish to gain access to the laboratory should schedule a meeting with Dr. Tarabara to discuss the purpose of the visit, the nature of the planned experimental work (equipment, samples, schedule, etc.), desired duration of having access, and other pertinent details.

Prior to beginning experimental work in the laboratory:

  1. All new lab members and visitors who plan on using equipment in the laboratory have to complete the following Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) online training courses:
    • Autoclave safety
    • Biosafety principles
    • Chemical hygiene, laboratory safety, and hazardous waste
    • Compressed gas cylinder safety
    • Hazard communication
    • Laboratory security awareness
    • Medical waste management
  2. All group members and visitors who plan on using equipment in the laboratory must take lab-specific training (see Lab- specific training checklist and Biological safety site-specific training record).
  3. Depending on the nature of your research, laboratory users may also need to take other courses. Biological substance shipping course is an example
  4. The following documents should be handed over to Mrs. Laura Post (one set of copies) and Dr. Tarabara (another set of copies):
