Web Accessibility

Web accessibility is the inclusive practice of removing barriers which prevent access to information and functionalities on websites. An online document or tool is accessible when it can be easily understood and used by everyone, regardless of the browser or adaptive equipment he or she is using.

The MSU Web Accessibility website (http://webaccess.msu.edu/index.html) provides a central place for web accessibility guidelines, tutorials, and services available to the MSU community.

Please continue to promote and support Universal Design by using the resources, training, and guidance provided on the MSU Web Accessibility website to update university Web content.

Course Materials

All online course materials and e-Text must meet the new Technical Guidelines. See the Course Content and Individual Faculty Web Pages FAQ page: http://webaccess.msu.edu/FAQ/course-content-questions.html

"This policy does not restrict what a faculty member teaches or how it is taught, but does require that all materials and content used in courses be made accessible. Consistent with Section 2.2.3 of the Academic Freedom Report for Students, faculty have the authority and responsibility for academic policy and practices in areas such as course content, grading, and classroom procedure. This Policy addresses the formatting of academic materials, as opposed to the choice of materials or content of materials. The Policy also permits exceptions for situations where compliance with the Policy would fundamentally alter the nature of an academic program or activity or would impose an undue burden. To request an exception, please follow the protocol outlined in Article IV of the MSU Web Accessibility Policy."


Templates are for commonly used documents and content management systems.  Keep in mind that templates may only help in structuring your content, the main content still needs to be formatted with accessibility in mind.

On the Web Accessibility Tutorials webpage (http://webaccess.msu.edu/Tutorials/index.html) you will find simple, step-by-step guides to solving common accessibility problems in a number of document types. Please note that while following these tutorials will improve document accessibility, they are not comprehensive. Think of these tutorials as the first step on the road to accessibility.

Classes and Workshops

Digital accessibility training is a great way to improve the accessibility of MSU content, understand why accessibility is important, and to get a better understanding of MSU's Web Accessibility Policy. In the development of this website, Division of Engineering Computing Services at MSU has worked towards adding a significant number of accessibility features to improve basic menu navigation and labeling in order to provide a simple and effortless navigation experience for all visitors regardless of the browser or adaptive equipment he or she is using.

Long-term, we will continue to research and implement solutions that bring the MSU Web top-level pages to the usual exemplary level in the areas of accessible and universal design.

Accessible Features in Drupal Content Management System (CMS)

If you rely on a screen reader or other assistive technology, you will be glad to know that we have built this site with Drupal, a content management system, to encourage and support the proper use of semantic markup. For example, you should be able to use headings reliably for page-level navigation.

The Drupal accessibility team has worked to identify accessibility barriers with Drupal and worked to resolve them. We've identified and resolved a number of issues in the core code of Drupal 7 and raised awareness within the community. We've added some additional support for Rich Internet Applications by adding some WAI-ARIA support. There have been many improvements to both the visitor and administrator sides of Drupal, especially:

  • Search engine form and presentation
  • Drag and Drop functionality
  • Color contrast and intensity
  • Adding skip navigation to core themes
  • Image handling
  • Form labeling
  • Removing duplicate or null tags
  • Pages contain 'skip to content' link


Browser and Device Guides

This site CSS uses relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified 'text size' option in visual browsers. If you need to change the text size in your web browser, see the following browser support pages:

Links and Images

  • Necessary links were assigned 'TITLE' attributes to describe the target in greater detail. Users of assistive technology may wish to set screen reader options to take full advantage of this feature.
  • Images used in this site include a descriptive 'ALT' attribute. Those images which are purely decorative or used for layout include a null 'ALT' attribute.


  • Screen reader table functions within screen readers may be used on this site. The tables are properly coded to take advantage of these functions. Example: Using JAWS in Internet Explorer, use Control - ALT - Right Arrow to properly read a table with table headers.
