The MSU-SWE Outreach Committee targets elementary, middle, and high school students in hopes of opening their minds to the possibilities that engineering has to offer and advising them in their search for a college path.
The outreach committee currently strives to reach young students through four main activities:
- Preview Day - The MSU colleges and programs specializing in science, engineering, and technology offer a chance for visitors to see their facilities, watch or participate in demonstrations, and talk to faculty and staff about careers in these fields. SWE members lend a hand by setting up a table where visitors may meet with current students and ask questions in an informal setting.
- Visits to Area Schools - SWE members talk to students curious about the opportunities of an Engineering degree. We have an approximately 1-hour presentation prepared to explain different aspects of engineering. A class period is the normal forum for these programs, and they are a lot of fun for both students (we hope!) and us.
- After School program at STEM Academy - We run an after school program for STEM Academy (a local math, engineering, and science magnet school). We use hands on activities to encourage the natural inquisitiveness of the kids. Then the scientific mindset is applied to those activities, therefore prodding the kids to go one step further in thinking. The program is designed to foster inquiring minds, and enable kids to start thinking like engineers.
