The goal of this study is to identify the changes in body posture while completing office work.
Nicole Arnold is conducting research on osteoarthritis of the carpometacarpal joint of the thumb. She is comparing force data pre- and post- surgery on the thumb.
The goal of this work is to understand the movements of an octopus arm to inform the design of a prosthetic, that will be able to complete all the tasks conducted by a human arm.
Archana Lamsal is conducting research, with Haworth seating company, on the biomechanics of the human body in different office working positions.
Adam Chrzan is conducting research on the biomechanical changes that occur after surgery associated with thumb arthritis. He is developing a novel three-dimensional visualization of the movement parameters so clinicians can easily see change in movement function.
Garrett Weidig, in the Bush lab, is studying the reach and grasp patterns of humans in everyday life in order to understand how current prosthetics can be improved on to fit their needs.
The recent increase in popularity of electric scooters has led to increased concern over the head injuries experienced by users. Currently, there are no well enforced regulations regarding helmets while riding. This is particularly relevant among young adults on college campuses. In response to this surge in head injuries, Dr. Tamara Bush of the Biomechanical Design Research Laboratory (BDRL) at MSU recognizes the need to research the impact experienced by electric scooter users in the case of a collision. In the BDRL, Dr. Bush and her students develop models, methods, devices, and experiments to apply engineering principles to the human body. This allows them to analyze and better understand how people interact with devices and their surroundings.
New, innovative devices include specialized equipment for members of the adaptive sports club to participate in athletic activities.
In order to design better wheelchairs, our lab has developed an experimental approach for obtainingin vivo soft tissue material property data.
Individuals with physical disabilities face many challenges in modern society, one of the largest being barriers related to transportation. The most common forms of transportation used by physically disabled individuals are personal vehicles, public transport, and paratransit services. However, all three of these have many constraints such as time needed for planning and travel, availability, and cost.
