Math in Fowlerville Middle School

Dr. Tamara Bush spent Friday morning (March 7th)  with the Fowlerville 5th grade advanced math group.  She taught the group on topics of geometry and ratios.  The groups performed experiments with bags of Skittles to determine ratios of red, yellow and purple skittles in each of their bags. The students were amazed at the differences in ratios -- some bags were loaded with red skittles, while others had very few.  Of course, we all ate the experiment when finished!

Kinetics (Forces) and Kinematics (Motions) Associated with the Human Body

Dr. Tamara Bush presented to multiple 5th grade classes at a local school on forces and motions associated with the human body.

Dr. Bush conduct this outreach activity annually and her talks are part of the fifth grade human body learning modules.  During this year's event, and at the first presentation Dr. Bush walked into the class, and one of the 5th graders blurted out "Dr. Bush is a girl?" This started the discussion about girls being engineers too...

Fowlerville 5th grade students learn about biomechanics!

Fifth grade students in a local school learned about Biomechanics and what it takes to be an engineers.  Students also learned about prosthetic devices and implants. Many of the students knew someone with a hip or knee replacement and were enthusiastic to hear more about them.  Dr. Bush also brought in a pressure mat and reflective motion capture markers.  The students were able to interact with both of these items  - they were particularly interested in seeing how the pressures on the buttock changed with interactions of different support surfaces (shown below).
