Melvin Dean

Melvin "Mel" Dean (BS Civ Egr '43) died peacefully Feb. 11 in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was 94.

He was born in 1920 in New York, N.Y. He graduated from Ottawa Hills High School and earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Michigan State University in 1943.

He served honorably in World War II as an officer with the U.S Navy Construction Battalions (Seabees) and underwater demolition teams (SEALs). After the war he served as an associate editor with
McGraw-Hill Publishing in New York City. He retired after many years serving as the public relations director for the Grand Rapids Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his daughter Sandy (Keith) Falan and son Jean (Becky) Pre Fontaine; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and four great great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Norma Joy, who died in 1999; son Jeffery Mark; brother Seymour; and sister Anita (Major) Belkin.

In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place, and he will be interred next to his wife in Fairpains Cemetery.
