Joseph R. Hannah

Joseph R. "Joe" Hannah (BS Elec Egr ’61) of Clifton Park, N.Y. passed away at his residence on Nov. 29, 2013.

Hannah, 78, was born in Flint, Mich., the son of the late James F. and Freda Clore Hannah. He graduated from Birch Run High School in 1953 and proudly served his country as a specialist third class in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Army of Occupation (Germany), Sharpshooter (Carbine), Marksman (Rifle) and Good Conduct Medals.

He continued his education at Michigan State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1961. He later earned a master’s degree at the Florida Institute of Technology.

He retired from a distinguished career at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory in Niskayuna, N.Y., and previously was employed in the development of various NASA's Apollo Projects. In his retirement he enjoyed traveling to Alaska to fish, to Sedona, Ariz., to hike and to Michigan to hunt. He spent countless days nurturing his yard and many gardens. He enjoyed cooking, canning and an occasional game of spider solitaire.  He was a member of the GE Elfunn Society.

He was the beloved husband of the late Dorothy Marie Mahoney Hannah. He is survived by his "sweetheart," Judy L. Jurgenson of Clifton Park; was father of Debra Surbrook and her husband Christopher of Alpharetta, Ga.; grandfather of Samuel Joseph, Julia Christine, Emma Marie and Zachary Russell; brother of John B. (Joanne), of Owosso, Mich., and the late James F. Hannah; and is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were Dec. 5 at St. Mary's Church in Waterford, N.Y. Arrangements were by the Gordon C. Emerick Funeral Home in Clifton Park. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society.
