John W. Potter

John W. Potter (BS Civ Egr '51) of Grand Rapids died Jan. 14, 2015. He was 89.

He was a graduate of Wyoming Park High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Corps having served as a fighter pilot during World War II.

Through the GI Bill, he attended Michigan State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering in 1951.

For more than 50 years, Potter owned and operated his own construction company, serving the greater Grand Rapids area. He was also past president of the Associated Contractors and the West Michigan Underground Contractors.

He is survived by Callista (Runge) Potter, his wife of 67 years; children, Janet (Mark) Moyer and John (Michelle) Potter; grandchildren, Melissa (Brandon) Kerkstra, Audrey (Dave) Maylone, Callista Potter and Cameron Potter.  

Services were Jan. 20 at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Grand Rapids. Contributions in his memory may be directed to the American Heart Association or the American Diabetes Association.
