John Gatchell Shedd

John Gatchell SheddJohn Gatchell Shedd (BS Mech Egr ‘41) of Rockton, Illinois, died Nov. 27, 2009, in Highview in the Woodlands after a short illness. He was 90. He was a lifelong resident of Rockford before moving to Rockton. He married Josephine Gummow on Feb. 12, 1949, in Old Stone Church. John was a mechanical engineer for Barber-Colman for 22 years and for Gilman Engineering for 13 years. He also was a farmer for 53 years. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was also a member of Second Congregational United Church of Christ in Rockford; the Masonic Lodge 102 AFandAM; the 41/4 Military Organization of Engineers; and the Winnebago County Farm Bureau, having served on the board of directors. He graduated from Rockford High School in 1936, and was senior class president. John enjoyed traveling internationally and in his motor home with his wife and family, taking photos. He also enjoyed his years as a private pilot. Survivors include wife Josephine of Rockton; sons, John (Sloane) Shedd of Princeton, N.J., Mark (Rose) Shedd of Rockton, Gary (Cheryl) Shedd of Rockton; daughter, Gayle (Dale) Haab of Roscoe; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brother, Bill (Carol) Shedd of Fort Wayne, Ind. He was predeceased by his brother Robert.
