Gerald Jacob Zerfas

Gerald Jacob Zerfas (BS ELEC EGR '51), from Reading, Massachusetts, died June 24 in Reading.  He was 89.

He was born in Byron Center, Michigan, to John and Clara Zerfas and left the family farm to attend Michigan State University, where he was active in ROTC and marching band. 

In 1951, he received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from MSU. 

Zerfas was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force for four years and obtaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He served at the Air Force Cambridge Resource Center in Massachusetts and Brandenburg Air Force Base in California. 

He left the Air Force and took a job with RCA, later GE, where he worked for 38 years as an electrical engineer. During his career, he regularly traveled to Florida to help with NASA's Apollo program. He provided radar expertise and was awarded for his contributions to landing a man on the moon.
