Charles Raymond Barnes, P.E.

Charles 'Chuck' Raymond Barnes (BS Civ Egr '60) of Boca Raton, Fla., passed away peacefully on April 12 surrounded by his family and loved ones.  He was 76.

Born in Grand Rapids on Nov. 18, 1938, to Patricia and Judd Barnes, he began paving his way to success in Lansing at Sexton High School by running track, breaking the city record, and was second in the state in the half mile.

He was the first in his family to obtain a college degree, earning a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from MSU in 1960. A graduate civil engineer and licensed professional engineer, he devoted his career to the construction industry as a general contractor. He was president of Foster, Schermerhorn & Barnes. He served on the board of directors for the Lansing Police and local bank boards, owned and managed a local recreational baseball team, became one of the top racquetball players in his region, and remained a devoted Spartan fan all his life. Moving to Florida, he became a licensed tri-county contractor purchasing Flooring World, a specialty flooring company located in Margate, Fla.

He is survived by his wife Cris, mother Patricia, brothers Cloyd and Richard, sister Cindy Pantalone and his children Theresa Holmstrom, Cheryl Burley, Jennifer Kehnast and Chuck; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild.

Services were at St. Gregory's Episcopal Church in Boca Raton on April 15. A memorial service in Michigan will be planned later.
