Quantitative Image Analysis with Applications to Cardiovascular, Oncologic, and Pediatric Care

This lecture will present a survey of recent research projects to introduce the IQ community to ongoing efforts in the Alessio lab. We will discuss a) dynamic contrast enhanced 4D analysis for quantitative perfusion estimation, b) custom spectral CT imaging for atherosclerosis, c) machine learning strategies for grading thyroid cancer, and d) new AI approaches for detection of sub-clinical rib fractures in pediatrics.

Dr. Alessio’s research group solves clinically motivated research problems with a focus on quantifying severity of disease from medical images and data for more precise patient care. Current efforts center on translational projects for topics including hybrid machine learning for quantitative diagnostics, cardiac perfusion estimation, quantitative PET and CT imaging, radiation dose optimization, and system modeling. Prior joining MSU, Dr. Alessio was a professor of Radiology at the University of Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame and post-doctoral training in nuclear medicine physics at the University of Washington.
