Spartan wins 2021 best paper for traffic control devices research

Md Shakir Mahmud, a PhD student in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, was awarded the “2021 Best Paper by a First Author Age 35 or Under” from the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) Committee on Traffic Control Devices.

The research is "Driver Response to a Dynamic Speed Feedback Sign on Freeway Exit Ramps based on Sign Location, Interchange Type, and Time of Day." It was co-authored by Md Shakir Mahmud, Matthew Motz, Travis Holpuch, Anthony Ingle, Timothy Gates, and Peter Savolainen, all of Michigan State University.

The award-winning paper will be presented in both virtual lectern and poster sessions at the TRB annual meeting on Thursday, Jan. 27.

The paper is also under subsequent peer review for publication in the Transportation Research Record journal.
