Civil and Environmental Engineering Associate Professor Irene Xagoraraki, and PhD students Brijen Miyani and Liang Zhao, are working to make a difference in water quality and public health.

They are using wastewater-based epidemiology testing to provide early warnings on virus outbreaks, including Covid-19, for residents in Detroit, Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties.

Their investigation of community composite samples - that can give a two-week head start in predicting health issues - are explained in this video.
