The State News looked at MSU’s funding relationship with the U.S. Dept. of Energy. "Years ago, the administration at MSU made the decision to become extremely strong in this field, quite frankly, to be the best," said Engineering Dean Leo Kempel. "You don't get these teams that are world-class in two or five years. It takes decades to grow."

ECE PhD student Xiao Zeng is the lead researcher on a cutting-edge technology that hopes to eliminate annoying background noises in hearing aids. Zeng is part of the research team of Mi Zhang, in electrical and computer engineering.

Three of MSU's groundwater pumping wells are out of rotation as a result of high radium levels found during recent testing, said Director of Utilities Robert Ellerhorst. If 5,000 people drank directly from Well 15 at its most contaminated for their entire lives, one of them would end up with a deadly form of cancer, said Environmental Engineering Professor Susan Masten, that's similar to the likelihood of dying in a car accident.

ZF, a German auto parts maker, has turned to MSU Engineering with the goal of developing new methods for easing these future threats. Betty H.C. Cheng, professor of computer science and engineering, will work with ZF to address automotive cybersecurity and safety issues by creating a cybersecurity method to help identify, mitigate and/or prevent threats to automotive systems.

Two from the College of Engineering – both applied engineering sciences majors – are on the 2017 MSU Homecoming Court. Colin White and Shuning Liu are featured as MSU celebrates “Uniquely Spartan” this year. They will be part of the homecoming parade on Oct. 20 and the football game vs. Indiana on Oct. 21.
