Bruce E. Dale, professor of chemical engineer and materials science, and Fang Zheng Peng, professor of electrical and computer engineering, are among nine Michigan State University professors named University Distinguished Professors in recognition of their achievements in the classroom, laboratory, and community.
The designations, recommended by President Lou Anna K. Simon, were approved by the MSU Board of Trustees at its June 21 meeting.
“I am so proud of these two deserving professors for the eminent achievements and scholarly accomplishments that led to this universitywide honor,” said Leo Kempel, acting dean of the College of Engineering. “This level of excellence reflects very positively on our faculty and college as we strive to meet the grand challenges of the 21st century.”
The University Distinguished Professors recognition is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member by the university. Those selected for the title have been recognized nationally and internationally for the importance of their teaching, research and outreach achievements.
Individuals holding the professorship will receive, in addition to their salary, a stipend of $5,000 per year for five years to support professional activities.
The University Distinguished Professor designation was established by the university and originally approved by the MSU Board of Trustees in 1989.
The Michigan State University College of Engineering is one of the largest and oldest colleges on campus, with six-departments and 170 faculty members serving nearly 3,000 undergraduate and 850 graduate students through 10 undergraduate and nine graduate degree programs.
