Joseph Melekian

Meritor, Inc., a leading global supplier of drivetrain, mobility, braking, and aftermarket solutions for commercial vehicle and industrial markets, named Joseph Melekian (BS Materials Sci and Egr '87) the company’s 2013 Product Engineer of the Year.

Melekian, senior materials engineer at Meritor’s Troy, Mich., headquarters, earned the award for developing and/or optimizing manufacturing and inspection processes worldwide by targeting areas of fabrication welding, cast products and material selection. Among them are brake component welding development, a new window-welding procedure for trailer axle manufacturing, axle housing and brake products, cast process optimization and a leading-edge laser-welding inspection process.

“Joe is recognized around the world for his significant contributions on multiple projects that are helping Meritor meet customer needs,” said Joe ElBehairy, vice president, Engineering, Quality and Product Strategy for Meritor. “His influence on critical programs and subsequent results of those programs in the last 12-18 months has earned him this award.”

Melekian lives in Rochester Hills, Mich. He earned a bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Michigan State University in 1987.
