James A. Susan, PE (BS Civ Egr '75; MS Sanitary Egr '77) of Grand Rapids, Mich., has been named president of Fishbeck, Thompson, Carr & Huber, Inc. (FTC&H). He succeeds James D. Townley, PE, who was elected chairman.

Susan joined FTC&H as an engineer in the firm's Environmental Division in 1992, and advanced to serve on various committees and key management positions including principal in 2003. His election as president demonstrates the board's continued emphasis on planning for the transfer of key leadership and management positions.

He becomes only the fifth president in the firm's 54-year history. He has more than 30 years of experience and has functioned as a role model within the firm. As the head of the Project Management Department, he is responsible for all aspects of project management in the firm including development, training, policies, and procedures. He leads the management committee, and the executive committee, and is also the corporate health and safety officer. He is deeply involved with all aspects of the firm's business operations and his primary responsibility is the implementation of strategic plans.

Over the years, he has been involved with several professional organizations including Air and Waste Management Association, American Academy of Environmental Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Works Association, Leadership Grand Rapids, and the Water Environment Federation. He is a registered professional engineer in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Maryland, South Carolina, New Jersey, and Florida; and he is a Board Certified Environmental Engineer. He has also served on the American Council of Engineering Companies/Michigan board of directors since 2005.
