Materials science major is Goldwater Scholar nominee
A materials science and engineering major is among four undergraduate students nominated by Michigan State University for the nationally competitive Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.
Emily England is an Honors College junior from Winfield, Illinois. She works in Assistant Professor Caroline Szczepanski’s polymer engineering lab and Professor Carl Boehlert’s research group in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. She is also a member of the Materials Science and Engineering Society and MSU Outdoors Club.
England called research an enriching experience. “More than that, research is exciting, and it introduces you to so many new experiences, new people, and so much new information. It's about being inquisitive and knowing that you don't have all the answers right away,” she said.

The Goldwater Scholarship provides funding for undergraduate tuition and living expenses. The Goldwater Foundation seeks sophomores and juniors committed to a research career in STEM fields with the potential for significant future contribution in their chosen field. The award provides $7,500 per year in funding for 51 students for undergraduate tuition and living expenses. MSU has produced 52 Goldwater Scholars.
