MSU team advances in U.S. DOE solar design challenge

A team of students at Michigan State University are finalists for this year’s Solar District Cup Collegiate Design Competition, hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy. MSU is the only university in the state of Michigan to advance in the national competition.

Team Adviser Woongkul (Matt) Lee, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering, said the contest is providing a strong design challenge with great tools, online training, and informational webinars.

“The MSU team was assigned to design an optimized solar power system for Cheyney University of Pennsylvania. We are so glad to hear that our solution is selected as one of the 35 teams for the finals round.”

Team members are Team Lead Bruno Hinojosa and Ming Gu, who are undergraduates in electrical and computer engineering. They are joined by Benjamin Schuchardt, a new undergraduate student in electrical and computer engineering, and Khan Jazib Islam, S M Asaduzzaman, and Toshi Vijaywargiya, graduate students in electrical and computer engineering.

“I joined the Solar District Cup with little to no knowledge of all the intricacies and challenges that come with the development of a solar system,” explained Hinojosa. “The team and I have come a long way to understand the multidisciplinary proficiency required for this challenge. It's fascinating to collaborate in a process where many disciplines like engineering, urban planning, and financing can come together to improve the community that is Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.”

Hinojosa also said the team is grateful for the opportunity and “is looking forward to representing MSU as we approach the second half of the competition.”

Lee noted the group is actively seeking new members to join MSU’s team. “Feel free to reach out to me or other team members to join us for the Solar District Cup!”
