Congratulations Professors Chan, Pennock and Udpa

MSU faculty recognized with University Distinguished Professor title

Three professors in the College of Engineering are among the 10 newest University Distinguished Professors at Michigan State University. The recognition – which honors achievements in the classroom, laboratory, and community -- is one of the highest honors that can be bestowed on a faculty member at MSU.

Those selected for the title have been recognized nationally and internationally for the importance of their teaching, research and outreach achievements.

The college’s newest University Distinguished Professors are:

Christina Chan: professor, Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, College of Engineering; professor, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, College of Natural Science; Institute for Quantitative Health Science and Engineering

Robert Pennock: professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, College of Engineering; professor, Lyman Briggs College; professor, Department of Philosophy, College of Arts and Letters; professor, ecology, evolutionary biology and behavior program

Lalita Udpa: professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering; Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory

Individuals holding the professorship will receive a stipend of $5,000 per year for five years to support professional activities in addition to their salary.

A reception to honor the newly designated University Distinguished Professors is planned for Nov. 21.

In all, 10 faculty members were named University Distinguished Professors by the board of trustees at its June 21 meeting. The designations were effective immediately.
