|Costa Rica, San Jose||The Universidad de Costa Rica||
Located in beautiful-tropical Central America, this winter-break (two-week 4 credits minimum) program explores the design and performance of clean energy and water systems in the tropics. Traveling on the program will be Universidad de Costa Rica peer faculty and students. Ecological carbon, water and energy footprints for bananas, rice and coffee will be used to categorize and evaluate system designs for sustainable economic, environmental and social systems.

The CEA STEM in Paris program creates education abroad opportunities for students during the summer between their freshman and sophomore year, during their sophomore academic year, and during the summer between their sophomore and junior year. It provides Engineering students the opportunity to complete CE 221 (required by 7 majors) and MTH 234 (required by all majors). These two courses are traditionally taken by students during their sophomore year. It also provides students with the opportunity to complete an upper-level ISS course. Because of students’ abilities to complete these courses during the summer, this program aligns with degree course work and the goal to promote sophomore level education abroad programs.

|Germany, Aachen||RWTH Aachen University||
An exceptional Summer opportunity for Mechanical Engineering students at MSU exists with of the MSU-RWTH (Aachen) Program. Students who have met the stringent academic and self-discipline/self-reliant criteria for acceptance will study and conduct research (ME 490) at one of Europe's premier technical universities: The Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH).
Students will study the German language in the stimulating environment where it is spoken and daily life provides daily practice. It is expected that all students will have taken GRM 101 (or equivalent) and be in the GRM 102 or higher level course.
Most importantly, they will work in the research labs of the RWTH on an ME 490 project. These projects place them in close contact with their research hosts and, through this connection, our students directly contact the German university system. These contacts allow them to learn how different that system is from our own.
An added benefit, embraced by past participants, is to execute this 9-credit study program with opportunities to travel in Europe on the planned three-day weekends.

This program, offered by the College of Engineering, gives students the opportunity to study physics in an intellectually stimulating environment at the largest university in Ireland - University College Dublin (UCD). The 8-week program consists of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, independent research, and fieldwork. Students who successfully complete the program may gain a full year's equivalent of calculus based physics in one summer.

This program will expose students to the practice of engineering in a culturally different environment. Students will study at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, ICAI School of Engineering in Madrid, Spain. Madrid is the capital of Spain and the political and financial center of the country. Students will have the opportunity to visit many cities surrounding Madrid such as Toledo, Seville, and Barcelona while studying engineering at the ICAI School of Engineering. Four engineering students each semester will engage in courses that satisfy sophomore, junior and senior requirements for Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, computer Science and Engineering, or other engineering programs.

The Technical University of Madrid (UPM, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid) is the oldest and largest of the Spanish Technical Universities. UPM has more than 3,000 faculty members, around 37,000 undergraduate students, and around 8,000 graduate students. Much of the history of Spanish technology for over 1.5 centuries was written by the Schools of Architecture and Engineering of this university.
UPM is located in the capital of Spain and the political and financial center of the country. Public transportation within Madrid is convenient and affordable, linking the university to all parts of the city. While studying here, students will also have the opportunity to visit many cities surrounding Madrid, such as Toledo, Seville, and Barcelona.
|Tanzania, Arusha, Mto wa Mbu||ICT for Development in Tanzania||
A 3-4 credit service-for-learning program shared by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and College of Engineering (ECE) Departments will give students a field study opportunity in Tanzania. Students will learn by experience how information and communication technologies can be harnessed to create practical solutions that make the world a better place starting in Tanzania.
Here at Michigan State University Education Abroad programs come in all shapes and sizes. While some students may prefer a more traditional education abroad involving classes and multiple 20 page papers due on return, those looking for a more hands on experience may be more interested in working with MSU's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Global Corps in Tanzania. The ICT Global Corps gives technically proficient students an opportunity to utilize their knowledge, and make a real impact in many developing parts of the world.
The ICT4D in Tanzania Education Abroad program has two major objectives. First, you will learn about the life, culture and environment of Tanzania. This will be accomplished through introductory language, culture, history and environment classes in a training institute, and during cultural tours and trips to three national parks. The second objective is to gain hands-on experience by designing and implementing projects to improve the quality of primary and secondary education in rural Tanzanian schools, where previous years' students have installed a network of five schools connected to the Internet. Depending on your background, you will upgrade/maintain software, computers, networking or solar power facilities, train teachers and students in using computers and video equipment, or do other activities. Technical expertise is not required.
While students and faculty are on a very busy work schedule in Tanzania, they still manage to find time to enjoy the region. Students learn a little bit of Swahili in order to communicate with the locals, but students don't need to be advanced linguists in order to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Tanzanian safari. For many students and faculty this trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with the African wilderness first hand.

Students on this program will work on community-based, service-learning projects in collaboration with students and faculty at Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. These projects will include DIY "maker" projects for renewable energy, water collection, water testing, drones, and hospital support.
