Australia, Sydney University of New South Wales (semester EX)

China, Hong Kong Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST)

Computer Science and Engineering students along with other engineering majors (by permission) may participate in the fall, spring and summer.

Costa Rica, San Jose The Universidad de Costa Rica

Traveling on the program will be Universidad de Costa Rica peer faculty and students. Ecological carbon, water and energy footprints for bananas, rice and coffee will be used to categorize and evaluate system designs for sustainable economic, environmental and social systems.

Denmark, Lyngby Technical University of Denmark

This country of mermaids, Vikings, delightful pastries and lovely beaches can enchant any tourist, which is why people come here year after year in search of the many pleasures this Scandinavian country has to offer. You will find something here that caters to every taste. Whether it's the Tivoli Gardens or the popular Legoland beaches, there is plenty for you to enjoy in Denmark no matter your age.

MSU College of Engineering students may study Fall and Spring at The Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby. Courses at DTU will be offered in English. The program is sponsored by the Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME), however, students from all departments in the College of Engineering may participate with department approval: Biosystems & Agricultural Engineering (BE); Chemical Engineering & Materials Science (CHE, MSE); Civil & Environmental Engineering (CE); Computer Science & Engineering (CSE) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE).

France, Paris CEA STEM in Paris

Photo of MSU Engineering students at CEA Paris CenterThe CEA STEM in Paris program creates education abroad opportunities for students during the summer between their freshman and sophomore year, during their sophomore academic year, and during the summer between their sophomore and junior year. It provides Engineering students the opportunity to complete CE 221 (required by 7 majors) and MTH 234 (required by all majors). These two courses are traditionally taken by students during their sophomore year. It also  provides students with the opportunity to complete an upper-level ISS course. Because of students’ abilities to complete these courses during the summer, this program aligns with  degree course work and the goal to promote sophomore level education abroad programs.  

Currently, CEA has 21 study abroad destinations across 12 countries. CEA enrolls more than 4,000 students on its programs annually. CEA offers semester length direct enroll programs with international institutions, it offers short term summer programs through study centers. The University of New Haven acts as CEA’s official School of Record.

Germany, Hannover Leibniz University

Germany, Aachen RWTH Aachen University

Photo of two people hang gliding in Switzerland while on a weekend break from the study abroad program in Aachen GermanyAn exceptional Summer opportunity for Mechanical Engineering students at MSU exists with of the MSU-RWTH (Aachen) Program. Students who have met the stringent academic and self-discipline/self-reliant criteria for acceptance will study and conduct research (ME 490) at one of Europe's premier technical universities: The Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule Aachen (RWTH).

Students will study the German language in the stimulating environment where it is spoken and daily life provides daily practice. It is expected that all students will have taken GRM 101 (or equivalent) and be in the GRM 102 or higher level course.

Most importantly, they will work in the research labs of the RWTH on an ME 490 project. These projects place them in close contact with their research hosts and, through this connection, our students directly contact the German university system. These contacts allow them to learn how different that system is from our own.

An added benefit, embraced by past participants, is to execute this 9-credit study program with opportunities to travel in Europe on the planned three-day weekends.

Ireland, Dublin University College Dublin: Summer Physics

This program, offered by the College of Engineering, gives students the opportunity to study physics in an intellectually stimulating  environment at the largest university in Ireland - University College Dublin (UCD). The 8-week program consists of lectures, tutorials, seminars, workshops, independent research, and fieldwork. Students who successfully complete the program may gain a full year's equivalent of calculus based physics in one summer. 

Studying in an European university broadens and deepens a student's understanding of their specific fields of study by being exposed with people with different worldviews. Universty College Dublin (UCD) offers students a supportive learning environment in which to live and study with a rich extracurricular life of social and cultural activities.

Italy, Rome John Cabot University

Scotland, Edinburgh The University of Edinburgh

In engineering, there is William John Macquorn Rankine, who proposed both the Rankine cycle (primary in the operation of steam power plants) and the Rankine temperature scale (the absolute scale used in English units). The university is in a short walking distance to the downtown city center that is the cultural hub for concerts, plays, and impromptu musical - dance opportunities, including bagpipers in uniform.

South Africa, Durban University of KwaZulu-Natal

South Africa's rich natural and ecological resources, ranging from Kruger National Park to Cape Town's majestic Table Mountain, its multi-cultural population, its inspiring history, and dynamic political milieu are some of the reasons drawing students to this irreplaceable study opportunity. With a tragic history of the apartheid struggle to the inspirational period of truth and reconciliation, South Africa is at the forefront of global awareness, focusing on the need for a more equitable and sustainable world order. The struggle against apartheid and its impact on the country's people and institutions is evident in the work of academics, non-governmental agencies and state institutions involved in these issues.

The University of Natal was founded in 1910 and was a major voice in the struggle against Apartheid. It was one of the first White designated universities in the country to provide education to students of color. With a recent history that parallels the civil rights struggle in the US, South Africa is a nation at the forefront of change, a change reflected at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

You will have the opportunity to study alongside South African students for a semester, gaining not only academic knowledge, but a larger global perspective through the friendships fostered between local and international students. You will be at one of the four campuses of the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) in your choice of multiple departments. Along with your studies, you can participate in community engagement through placements in local non-governmental organizations and explore the country through independent travel. Spain, Madrid Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, Spain

Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, Spain

This program will expose students to the practice of engineering in a culturally different environment. Students will study at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, ICAI School of Engineering in Madrid, Spain. Madrid is the capital of Spain and the political and financial center of the country. Students will have the opportunity to visit many cities surrounding Madrid such as Toledo, Seville, and Barcelona while studying engineering at the ICAI School of Engineering. Four engineering students each semester will engage in courses that satisfy sophomore, junior and senior requirements for Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, computer Science and Engineering, or other engineering programs.

Spain, Madrid University of Politécnica de Madrid

Group photo of MSU students in Education Abroad in Madrid, Spain 2017The Technical University of Madrid (UPM, Universidad Politecnica de Madrid) is the oldest and largest of the Spanish Technical Universities. UPM has more than 3,000 faculty members, around 37,000 undergraduate students, and around 8,000 graduate students. Much of the history of Spanish technology for over 1.5 centuries was written by the Schools of Architecture and Engineering of this university.

UPM is located in the capital of Spain and the political and financial center of the country. Public transportation within Madrid is convenient and affordable, linking the university to all parts of the city. While studying here, students will also have the opportunity to visit many cities surrounding Madrid, such as Toledo, Seville, and Barcelona.

Taiwan, Taipei National Taiwan University

MSU College of Engineering students will enjoy the beauty in geography and climate. Taiwan's climate is subtropical, the average summer temperature is 84 degrees and winter temperature is 61 degrees. Students will be taught in English and live in campus housing. The program runs both fall and spring semesters. Early application is a must.

Tanzania, Arusha, Mto wa Mbu ICT for Development in Tanzania

Photo of a computer classroom in TanzaniaA 3-4 credit service-for-learning program shared by Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and College of Engineering (ECE) Departments will give students a field study opportunity in Tanzania. Students will learn by experience how information and communication technologies can be harnessed to create practical solutions that make the world a better place starting in Tanzania.

Here at Michigan State University Education Abroad programs come in all shapes and sizes. While some students may prefer a more traditional education abroad involving classes and multiple 20 page papers due on return, those looking for a more hands on experience may be more interested in working with MSU's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Global Corps in Tanzania. The ICT Global Corps gives technically proficient students an opportunity to utilize their knowledge, and make a real impact in many developing parts of the world.

The ICT4D in Tanzania Education Abroad program has two major objectives. First, you will learn about the life, culture and environment of Tanzania. This will be accomplished through introductory language, culture, history and environment classes in a training institute, and during cultural tours and trips to three national parks. The second objective is to gain hands-on experience by designing and implementing projects to improve the quality of primary and secondary education in rural Tanzanian schools, where previous years' students have installed a network of five schools connected to the Internet. Depending on your background, you will upgrade/maintain software, computers, networking or solar power facilities, train teachers and students in using computers and video equipment, or do other activities. Technical expertise is not required.

While students and faculty are on a very busy work schedule in Tanzania, they still manage to find time to enjoy the region. Students learn a little bit of Swahili in order to communicate with the locals, but students don't need to be advanced linguists in order to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Tanzanian safari. For many students and faculty this trip was a once in a lifetime opportunity to interact with the African wilderness first hand.

Tanzania, Mbeya City Make It in Tanzania

Make It in TanzaniaStudents on this program will work on community-based, service-learning  projects in collaboration with students and faculty at Mbeya University of Science and Technology (MUST) in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania. These projects will include  DIY "maker" projects for renewable energy, water collection,  water testing, drones, and hospital support. 

During the last week of the program, MSU and MUST students will  travel north into the Arusha region, where they will conduct additional  field testing. We will also explore Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Papyrus Lake, and Lake Manyara with their amazing landscapes and animal life

Japan, Sendai Tohoku University STEM Summer Program (TSSP)

Tohoku University STEM Summer Program (TSSP): Exploring the Frontier of Science and Technology is specifically designed for undergraduates majoring in the STEM fields (Science and Engineering). Students will receive four MSU credits (8 ECT credits) in 4 weeks (Mid-June - Mid July). Courses are taught in English. It provides a unique opportunity for freshmen and sophomores to learn about the originality and the state of the advanced and art technology that can be seen in various engineering produced in Japan. Students will also get hands-on experience learning about creative science and engineering at one of Japan’s premier universities, Tohoku University, in Sendai City. During the course of the program, students will be introduced to fundamental engineering concepts through lectures, lab visit, and laboratory work. Students then work on project teams with Tohoku University engineering students to use innovative engineering concepts to solve problems. In addition, several special seminars and lectures are given by experts to develop knowledge about more advanced science and engineering principles. 

During the four-week program, lessons and site visits will show students how Japanese society impacts the country’s culture of science and engineering. The program provides Japanese language training and exposure to traditional local culture through workshops and site visits. Several field trips will take students to tour J-PARC of a series of world-class proton accelerators and the experimental facilities, a production plant for a Japanese automotive manufacturer, to visit the historic castle in Shiroishi, and to see the recovery efforts in coastal areas around Sendai, most affected by the 2011 tsunami.
