Intelligent Edge Microsystems Research Lab (I-EML)

The Intelligent Edge Microsystems Research Lab at Michigan State University advances the science and engineering of intelligent, high-performance computing and sensing at the network edge. Our work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, distributed systems, advanced sensing, and next-generation hardware, with a mission to create technologies that deliver fast, reliable, and efficient intelligence wherever data is generated.

We integrate advanced AI and deep learning, AI-IoT sensing technologies, hardware–software co-design, and heterogeneous integration approaches to push the boundaries of edge computing performance and capability.

Healthcare-Focused AI Innovations

Healthcare-Focused AI Innovations

A significant portion of our current research addresses critical healthcare challenges. Ongoing projects include:

  • AI-based image-analysis tools to support cardiovascular-patient care and home monitoring
  • AI-driven vocal biomarker analysis for early detection and progression tracking of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Integrated sensing, deep learning, and embedded computation to enable continuous, reliable health insights outside clinical settings

Our multidisciplinary expertise—spanning AI/ML model development, image and speech processing, sensor design, embedded systems, and heterogeneous integration—positions the lab as a strong collaborator for research partners in co-developing innovative solutions and joint research programs.

Translational & Collaborative Focus

Our healthcare projects are designed with translation in mind, emphasizing robust sensing, trustworthy AI models, and deployment in real-world environments such as homes, clinics, and remote-care settings.

We are interested in joint efforts with clinical, industrial, and academic partners to validate technologies, co-develop platforms, and pursue collaborative funding mechanisms.
