How to enroll with The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM):

Michigan State University (MSU) and the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM) have agreed to collaborate to allow students to enroll in a doctoral engineering program at the reciprocal institution while enrolled at their home institution.

Students interested in applying to this program should apply directly to the departments they are interested in applying – both at MSU and at IIT Madras.Photo of groups of people discussing research

Each individual student will form a committee comprised of faculty from both institutions and that committee will determine the graduate department. A Graduate Plan will be established to determine the PhD coursework.  PhD requirements are determined at the Departmental level. The committee could waive some courses or require additional work.

Students are enrolling in existing PhD programs; the institutions are not creating a new PhD. Multiple PhD Degrees can be sought, for example, if the student meets the degree requirements in Chemical Engineering at one institution and the Materials Science degree requirements in the second institution, the student will be awarded the PhD degree for requirements met by each institution. A student must meet all of MSU requirements to receive MSU’s PhD.  A student must meet IIT Madras requirements to receive IIT Madras’s PhD.

MSU and IIT Madras have strong research and faculty collaborations, this dual PhD degree program offers an exceptional PhD graduate research opportunity to its students.
