Michigan State University was one of three universities honored with the 2012 Impact Award sponsored by the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) and ExxonMobil.
The award was given to universities in recognition of their program’s outstanding success in recruiting and retaining underrepresented minority students in engineering disciplines. The award includes $10,000 in grant funds to each school.
The Diversity Programs Office Scholars Program (DPO-SP) was selected for its results based progress in retaining underrepresented minority students in engineering related programs. DPO-SP provides structure for students during their first two years, which are most critical of a college student’s experience. Mandatory program participation ensures a high level of commitment from both students and faculty engaged with the DPO-SP to combat declining enrollment and graduation rates in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields.
