Ultracryomicrotome

You are here

The ultramicrotome is used to cut very thin sections of specimens. This is required for some techniques like TEM and AFM.

Ultramicrotoming is the cutting of extremely thin sections of a sample using a device called a microtome. The cryo attachment provides the user with capabilities of cutting semi thin and ultra thin sections of materials or biological specimens at sub zero temperatures. Currently, the CMSC is the only facility on campus with cryo-ultramicrotomy capabilities. The RMS cryo-ultramicrotome at CMSC is used primarily for preparing sections for analysis by TEM and preparation of polymer composite materials for surface examination with the AFM.
