What's a Sensor Technology Interface?

Currently, there are many different types of sensors, both analog and digital. These sensors span many different protocols, from the well known Bluetooth, to the ANT+ protocol used in health and fitness products and the mesh protocol ZigBee. The Sensor Technology Interface, will allow one to communicate and control many different types of sensors through the use of a single user interface, simplifying the set-up process of working with new sensors.

Why Do We Need Sensors?

There has been a recent trend to move towards smart devices -- electricity meters that alerts both the customer and the power company of real-time electricity usage so that the customer can adjust their electricity usage throughout the biling period, thermostats that let you adjust the temperature of your house while you're not at home, and burglar alarms that alert the owner that there has been a break in. These devices all require sensors to detect a current variable, and that can only be done through sensors.

How Will the Sensor Technology Interface Be Implemented?

The Sensor Technology Interface will have three major parts: an Android application, a microcontroller, and the sensors themselves. The sensors will communicate via their various protocols (ANT+, Bluetooth, ZigBee, I2C) to the microcontroller, which will then relay to an available Android device if available. If no Android device is available, the microcontroller will store up to 1 hour of data.
