We are working with Lenovo, the MSU Department of Telecommunication, and the University of Dar es Salaam to create a multi-terminal, internet enabled, solar powered computer system for deployment in third world countries. The University of Dar es Salaams primary role is to provide us with language and on site support.
The target deployment zones are impoverished rural areas of the world. These places lack basic amenities such as indoor plumbing and electricity. Naturally, these villages lack the basic resources for providing their youth with a proper education. We are making a self contained solution to provide educational resources to the poorest regions of the world.
With help from the telecommunications department, we have acquired a low power satellite internet system. Our job is to integrate a solar panel, battery, multiple monitors, keyboards, computer system, and the satellite system into a single, self contained unit. After integrating the system, we will thoroughly test and harden it to ensure it will survive in a harsh environment.
Our main approach is to a power computer act as a server and multiple dumb terminals for the users. The solar panel will continuously charge a large battery which feeds into an inverter that provides power to the computer and terminals. We will have monitoring and control circuitry between all parts of the system. This will allow us to see where the inefficiencies of our design are and how to fix them.
