Venkatesh Kodur, Ph.D.
Chairperson

Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University! Dr. Venkatesh Kodur

I am pleased to have been named Chairperson of the Department effective July 1, 2016, following Dr. Tom Wolff's serving as Interim Chairperson for the past year. While starting retirement this fall, Dr. Wolff will continue to assist the department and college on a part time basis.

Our department offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in two programs, Civil Engineering and and Environmental Engineering. Within these programs, our faculty focus in six major areas of concentration: Environmental Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Pavements Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Hydrology and Water Resources.

We are proud of our undergraduate degree programs in Civil and Environmental Engineering, both of which are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.  Undergraduate students can receive a general civil engineering education or become more specialized in one of the several areas listed above. Our college career office, The Center for Spartan Engineering, will assist them in finding paid internships and co-op placements early in their college career. High achieving students have opportunities for undergraduate research and pursuit of the Linked BS-MS Programs in Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering, allowing them to complete a Masters Degree with an additional 21 credits of graduate work.

We also have excellent graduate programs and award M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering and in Environmental Engineering. Our graduate and research emphasis areas are in environmental engineering, structural engineering, mechanics and materials, transportation infrastructure systems, and hydrology and water resources.

Our department also hosts the National Center for Pavement Preservation, which leads collaboration among government agencies, industry and academic to improve pavement preservation practices.

There is much more to learn about our department and its people, but we've tried to make these pages quick and easy to use for a broad range of  users. If you would like more details on something in particular, please contact us at cee@egr.msu.edu. We will be happy to answer whatever questions you might have and to meet with you when you visit the campus.

For further information on the undergraduate program contact Dr. Susan Masten, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Studies (masten@egr.msu.edu) or for graduate programs myself, Dr. Venkatesh Kodur, (kodur@egr.msu.edu). (We will be naming a new Associate Chairperson before the start of fall semester).
