Deadlines and Schedule


Fall Semester Admission

(this is the preferred semester for starting graduate study)

December 31 – applications due for applicants desiring full consideration, including financial support. All supporting material (e.g. transcripts, test scores, recommendations) must also be received
Early March – applicants notified of admission and initial financial support decisions
April 15applicant acceptance of financial support due (signature on admission letter, send by email or fax)
Summer – welcome and information letter sent
August 15 – starting date for research and teaching assistants (if unable to arrive by this date, RAs must make arrangements with their graduate advisor and TAs with their supervising instructor)
Late Augustorientation, date announced in welcome letter (new students should plan to arrive several days before orientation)
Late August – classes start, check MSU academic calendar for date.

Spring semester enrollment – see information below if you wish to be considered for Spring semester enrollment

Spring Semester Admission

It is possible for students to begin MS study in a Spring semester (starts early January), but they should be aware that this may result in issues with course sequencing. The time to complete the overall plan of study may extend longer, unless they have previous coursework prepares them for Spring semester courses. Consideration for financial support for MS students starting in spring is limited to research assistant positions offered by faculty members. PhD applicants can also be considered for Spring enrollment, at the discretion of the academic advisor. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Associate Chairperson for Graduate Studies for more information.

Deferred Enrollment

Students admitted to a MS program may defer enrollment by a maximum of one year by notifying the Graduate Secretary, Offers of financial support are not automatically deferrable, but the student may request reconsideration. PhD applicants should discuss a need to defer enrollment with their academic advisor.
