Admission Standards - Civil Engineering

You are here

The civil engineering graduate programs at MSU have been designed to be accessible to students with previous education in  civil engineering and closely-related disciplines. The overarching standard for admission is a determination that the applicant has a high probability of success in both graduate study and in professional practice. As such, each application is reviewed by a committee of faculty members as a complete package and a determination is made on the basis of the totality of the materials submitted.  For this reason, we are not able to provide assessment of the likelihood of admission on the basis of material submitted informally via mail or e-mail.  However, applicants may wish to consider the following general standards.

MS Program Admission Standards

The general MS admission standards are:

A grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0), or 80% for other grading systems, or first-class designation, in a B.S. program in engineering

College-level coursework with good grades in subjects related to civil engineering, including statics, mechanics of deformable solids, and materials.  Applicants with a limited number of deficiencies can be admitted under provisional status with the requirement that specified collateral courses be completed without graduate program credit.

GRE scores demonstrating reasonable verbal skills, high quantitative skills, and strong analytical writing skills (typically ³ 3.0).

Letters of recommendation showing clear indication that the applicant has the potential for success in a quality graduate program.

PhD Program Admission Standards

The general PhD admission standards are:

A GPA of at least 3.5, or 85%, in a M.S degree program in civil engineering

Evidence of an interest and aptitude in conducting research

GRE scores demonstrating reasonable verbal skills, high quantitative skills, and strong analytical writing skills (typically ³ 3.5).

Letters of recommendation showing clear indication that the applicant has the potential for success as an independent researcher.

Additional Requirements for International Students

Proficiency requirements for the English language, and other admission requirements for international graduate students, are posted by the Office of Admissions. Applicants meeting the overall TOEFL score requirement, but not one or more of the subscores, can be admitted under provisional status with the requirement that they successfully pass an English exam administered by the University prior to the completion of the first year of graduate study.
