Academic Background:

I completed my undergraduate and masters degrees from MSU in Material Science and Engineering. As an undergraduate, in the CHEMs Department I was part of biomedical/biomaterials engineering research. My work involved testing bone replacement materials for mechanical integrity and biocompatibility. After joining the BAE department I have been involved in a research project funded by the Great Lakes Bioenergy Center involving biomass/lignin deconstruction using fast pyrolysis as the depolymerization process. Additionally I am focused on upgrading these depolymerized products using electrocatalysis to produce viable liquid fuel components. My current research work focuses on lignin model compound upgrading using electrocatalytic hydrogenation.

Biography (Personal Interest):

I was born and raised in Ethiopia and came to MSU as an undergrad to study Material Science and Engineering and I have been here ever since. In my spare time I enjoying doing yoga, hiking and camping and getting involved in service work and volunteer work through student organizations at MSU such as Alternative Spartan Breaks. I am also very passionate about involvement and advancement of minority students and women in the STEM disciplines and work in my spare time to provide mentoring/tutoring to such students.
