Oil extraction for biodiesel production was achieved using mechanical oil-extraction. A mechanical crusher was used that would be typical for use on a small to mid-sized farm.  The crushing unit was obtained through MSU Extension (see figure below).

After crushing, the characteristics of the raw crushed residue for the various oilseeds were measured before digestion. Parameters include:
  • Mass of the volatile solids (VS),
  • VS fraction as a function of total mass
  • Chemical oxygen demand (COD)
  • Ammonia
  • pH
Farm grade biodiesel was produced from the Biodiesel Module, and the fuel was tested to assess energy content, potential contaminants and other fuel characteristics.
