Hayder Radha honored with 2016 William Beal Outstanding Faculty Award
Hayder Radha received the William Beal Outstanding Faculty Award on Feb. 9, 2016
Hayder Radha is among the 10 Michigan State University faculty members who was honored for their outstanding contributions to education and research with the William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Awards at the annual MSU Awards Convocation Feb. 9, 2016.
This MSU award recognizes a comprehensive and sustained record of scholarly excellence in research and/or creative activities, instruction and outreach.

Radha is a professor of electrical and computer engineering (ECE), the ECE associate chair for research, and the director of the WAVES Lab at MSU.
He is a fellow of the IEEE, and he was appointed as a Philips Research Fellow and Consulting Scientist in 1998, and as a Bell Labs’ Distinguished Member of Technical Staff in 1992. He is a recipient of two Google Faculty Research Awards, in 2014 and 2015. He is also a recipient of the AT&T Bell Labs Ambassador Award, AT&T Circle of Excellence Award, the MSU College of Engineering Withrow Distinguished Scholar Awards (both as junior and senior faculty), and the Microsoft Research Content and Curriculum Award.
He was elected as a member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Image, Video, and Multidimensional Signal Processing (IVMSP) and the IEEE Technical Committee on Multimedia Signal Processing (MMSP). He served as co-chair and editor of a Video Coding Experts Group of the International Telecommunications Union – Telecommunications Section (ITU-T) between 1994-1996.
His current research areas include compressed sensing and signal sparsification for BIGDATA, hyperspectral imaging and signal processing for environmental sustainability, signal processing of network graphs, analysis of social networks, and visual processing, coding, and communications. He has more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and 30 patents.
MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon will congratulate Radha and the other Beal Faculty Award winners at the ceremony and salute their contributions to the university's excellence. MSU will award several other top honors at the convocation.
Simon also will take a few minutes to acknowledge MSU's Founders Day. The new honorees bring the number of MSU faculty honored since the Beal award was established in 1952 to 531. The Office of University Development supports the William J. Beal Outstanding Faculty Awards.
William James Beal (March 11, 1833 – May 12, 1924) was an American botanist, who was professor of botany (1871-1910) and curator of the museum (1882-1903) at the Michigan Agricultural College (MAC), now MSU. He was a pioneer in the development of hybrid corn and the founder of MSU’s renowned W. J. Beal Botanical Garden.
