This historical perspective is provided by Eugene Sevin, one of the Founding Fathers of CONCAM, with the much appreciated help of Alex Majewski, AMD's ASME representative, and Ted Belytschko.

In the summer of 1969, the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME held a special conference on computational approaches at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). The proceedings volume was entitled "Computational Approaches in Applied Mechanics" - edited by Eugene Sevin. The members of the Program Committee were Richard Bellman, SJ Fenves, DS Griffin, WC Reynolds, RM Bakke, S Batdorf, DA Beaty, HP Fullerton, AA Pouring, D Witkin and P Chiarulli.

The success of this conference resulted in the AMD Executive Committee forming a Committee on Computing in Applied Mechanics, as described in the following Annual Report excerpt.

ANNUAL REPORT
Applied Mechanics Division, ASME
1969-70

The Division has established a Committee on Computing in Applied Mechanics. This activity is an outgrowth of the highly successful special conference on computational techniques organized and conducted by AMD in June 1969. This committee is patterned after the extremely active Committee on Shock and Vibration, and will similarly seek to stimulate AMD membership interest by special technical programs.

The Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division in 1969-70 consisted of:

H. N. Abramson, Chairman P. M. Naghdi, Publications
S. Levy, Secretary C. Herrmann, Honors
J. Kestin, Program B.Boley, Member-designate
A. Biron, Recording Secretary
