The MSU-SWE Outreach Committee has targets elementary, middle, and high school students in hopes of opening their minds to the possibilities that engineering has to offer and advising them in their search for a college path.

The outreach committee currently strives to reach young students through four main activities:
  • High School Buddy Day - SWE members, along with volunteers from Tau Beta Pi, Triangle Fraternity, and general Engineering College membership, host one or more high school students for a day in an engineering student's life. Bring your buddy to classes and around campus to show them what we do all day. It is a great way to get involved, this can go on your resume, fulfill a service project, etc. We need people from all majors (both men and women).

  • Science, Engineering, and Technology Day - The MSU colleges and programs specializing in science, engineering, and technology offer a chance for visitors to see their facilities, watch or participate in demonstrations, and talk to faculty and staff about careers in these fields. SWE members lend a hand by setting up a table where visitors may meet with current students and ask questions in an informal setting.

  • Visits to Area Schools - SWE members talk to students curious about the opportunities of an Engineering degree. We have an approximately 1-hour presentation prepared to explain different aspects of engineering. A class period is the normal forum for these programs, and they are a lot of fun for both high school students (we hope!) and us.

  • After School program at Wood Creek Elementary - We run an after school program for Woodcreek elementary school ( a local math, engineering, and science magnet school). We use hands on activities to encourage the natural inquisitiveness of the kids. Then the scientific mindset is applied to those activities, therefore prodding the kids to go one step further in thinking. The program is designed to foster inquiring minds, and enable kids to start thinking like engineers.
