Dr. Baek is an assistant
professor in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering at Michigan State University. Dr. Baek received his Ph.D.
in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 from Texas A&M University,
where
he remained to conduct postdoctoral research in the Department of
Biomedical Engineering until coming to MSU in 2006. His research
focuses on mechanics of biomaterials and their applications to
biomedical engineering. He supervises research and education activities
in theCardiovascular
and Tissue
Mechanics
Research Laboratory.
His
hobbies are watching college football and
basketball games, and playing tennis and golf.
Ph.D. Candidates Byron Zambran (Fall, 2011~)
Byron received his MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from University
of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez
with an emphasis in Computational Fluid Dynamics. He joined the lab as
a PhD student with a focus on computational modeling of blood flow in Abdominal Aortic Aneurism.
His research also includes study of platelet activation and
the formation of intraluminal thrombus layer found in Abdominal Aortic
Aneurysms.
Masters Candidates Alexander
Dupay (Spring, 2011~) Alex
received his Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Michigan
State in 2010 with a focus in Biomechanics. He has translated
patient-specific CT image data into formats for use in multiple
projects throughout the CVTM lab. His particular research interest is
the study of dynamic interactions of abdominal aortic aneurysm
with surrounding tissues during its progression. Alex will also
be involved in a summer project with K-12 Outreach to
bring current engineering research interests to the classroom.
Undergraduate Researchers
Jared Kavinsky (Undergraduate researcher (PA), 2010~) Albie Feeny (Summer intern, 2011, 2012) Albie
graduated from Okemos High School in 2011, and is an undergraduate
student at Johns Hopkins University to study Biomedical
Engineering. During the summer 2011 and 2012, he is working on
computation simulation and
literature studies of abdominal aortic aneurysms. His hobbies include
piano,
violin, guitar, ice hockey, and most other sports. Other Researchers Angela
Kolonich (RET teacher, 2011~)
Angela Kolonich received her Bachelors Degree in Physical Science
and Biology with a Secondary Teaching Certificate from Central Michigan University in 2003.
She has been teaching Science and Engineering at J. W. Sexton High School in Lansing for the past six years,
and coached the Sexton Robotics team for the past four years.
Currently, Angela is enrolled as a graduate student at Michigan State University and will receive her Masters Degree
in Biological Science in summer of 2011. Angela is also working in the Cardiovascular Tissue Research laboratory as part
of the RET Initiative sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
She will be working on AAA research, and also to prepare lessons for her classroom that integrate science and engineering.
Angela is very excited to participate in the RET program
as a way to make engineering more accessible to her students.
